Migration and re-architecting of a self-service platform (“Migration Cockpit”) to automate and manage global file service migrations within Siemens’ Azure environment.
Challenge / Problem
The existing Migration Cockpit V2 platform had several structural limitations. Missing process documentation, manual workflows, and limited integration capabilities made it difficult to execute file share migrations efficiently and transparently.
- Lack of standardized and documented migration processes
- Inconsistent data handling between Migration Cockpit, SQL database, and connected systems
- Limited integration with automation tools and APIs
- Manual coordination between migration teams, architects, and external partners
- Increasing scalability requirements due to thousands of planned file share migrations
Our Approach
CloudAstro first analyzed the existing workflows and designed an end-to-end process framework for the next generation of the Migration Cockpit platform.
- Conducted multiple deep-dive workshops with the migration and architecture teams
- Analyzed existing processes, integrations, and operational bottlenecks
- Designed an end-to-end process framework aligned with the Migration Cockpit V3 API architecture
- Defined clear responsibilities and data flows between Cockpit, SQL database, and integrated systems
- Aligned the new architecture with Siemens NGFS2Azure architecture principles and compliance requirements
Implementation
The platform was implemented as an automated, API-driven process environment to enable transparent, reliable, and scalable migration workflows.
- Designed a dedicated database schema to store operational data and audit information
- Integrated backend logic with Migration Cockpit V3 APIs for synchronization, status updates, and process automation
- Established a QA environment for end-to-end validation and coordinated user acceptance testing
- Developed automated scripts for key processes including offer uploads, scheduling, approval workflows, and deletion processes
- Implemented email and workflow triggers to automate migration coordination and notifications
Results
The new Migration Cockpit platform provides an automated, transparent, and scalable foundation for global file service migrations at Siemens.
- Fully automated, API-driven migration workflows
- Significantly improved transparency and traceability through live reporting and audit logs
- Reduced process errors and migration delays
- Improved collaboration between migration teams, architecture teams, and external partners
- Scalable platform foundation for future self-service and automation capabilities within the NGFS2Azure environment
